How common is it?


When most people think of cancer, they don't think of cancer of the mouth.

However, this type of malignancy is more common and more dangerous than you might realize. Oral cancers account for 4% of all cancers diagnosed each year.

About 54,540 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, and more than 11,580 people die from it annually, in this country alone, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation.


80% of all Oral Cancer cases are found in these 5 sites:


The tongue (25.5% of diagnosed cases each year)


Labial/buccal mucosa (inner lining of lips and cheeks) (22%)


Gingiva (gum) tissues (14.0%)


Palate (10%)


Alveolar mucosa (tissue between the lips
